Hall St

With a view over a small garden to a garage and utility area and the prospect of late afternoon glare conventional window placement were eschewed in preference for a ‘floating’ art wall over a floor that extends into the cottage garden.

Writers’ Studio

In the backyard of an inner city terrace the shape of this stand alone writing studio is designed to maximise sunlight in winter while enabling garden and seating elements to revegetate and socialise some of the lost space.

Hall St

Unusually a metal clad study come bar penetrates into the main bedroom. Recycled timber battens were used to make a bedhead.

Redlegs Museum

The Norwood Football Club’s new Redlegs Museum. Renovating the former Mayors Parlour under the Western Grandstand, the museum will house the 100 treasures while also providing spaces for interactive displays, group learning and functions.

Hahndorf

A new build for a previous client. This one literally came to life as a sketch on a serviette at Nano’s. Rammed earth was a natural choice for the main internal walls and plinths which extend outside to reinforce the connection to the surrounding landscape.

Wilya-build Lonsdale

A flexible business, function space showcasing recycled timber and with access to a team of highly skilled crafts people.

Magill

A new kitchen/ diner in a relatively old bluestone villa. The brass splashback helps to keep oil off the tile grout and provides an impressionistic backdrop to a ‘still life’ composition that features some classic South Australian design. A dark base helps the kitchen to recede into the background when in dining mode

Hyde Park Salon Residence

Working with the existing levels to create a dynamic series of indoor and outdoor platforms which enable some unexpected internal topography and unique interactions with hanging plants and pendants giving everyday objects a sense of drama.

9.jpg

Aldinga

Renovation of an existing holiday shack.

Medindie Gardens

An extension to the South around an existing pool. The living areas curve around the pool with flexible options for sun and shading. New internal areas to the North are sunken down to allow for opportunities for norther sun to backlit the internal space.

Project undertaken while working at Grieve Gillett Architects.

Unley

A North facing extension on a small inner city corner allotment, the design needed to work with all the site had to offer.

FAD 2019 courtyard activation

The installation was built with the help of Evoque Homes, Phenomenal Furniture and Kitchen and Insight lighting. With an unlimited supply of poly piu translucent cladding and a dedicated team of volunteers from Grieve Gillett Architects and The University of Adelaide

Inner city ensuite

A bedroom renovated into an ensuite bathroom with a wall of storage. The existing fireplace and windows were retained as reminders of a glorious past life. A suitable pendant over the bath could not be found with the appropriate IP rating so an Alex Calder mobile was used instead adding movement and subtle lighting effects to contemplate while in the bath.

Spatial Data Infographic

As par as we have found the are 234 airports in South Australia. All of them are represented in this infographic that was designed for use in schools. The total size is approximately 4m x 1.5m and was made using google earth.

Hazelwood Park

A cellar with a large vertical skylight. Deep timber blades wer used to accentuate the passage of the stairs and to ‘catch’ the sunlight so that it illuminates the timber but does not settle upon the wine.

16.jpg

Hahndorf

Using dirt sourced from the site, the main internal rammed earth walls touch every internal space an extending beyond the perimeter walls to guide people inside and then outwards to the views over the valley. The restrained palette of materials directs attention to the sunlight as it moves around the space during the day.

17.jpg

Medindie Gardens

The clients were keen to feature local designers and the adjacent spaces had to support large gatherings. Thought was given to how different types of seating could coexist and support a range of social scenarios in style and comfort.

Project undertaken while working at Grieve Gillett Architects.

NMA Childrens wing

This graphic representation conveys the technical spatial layout of the proposed children’s wing at the NMA combined with a sense of how, when activated by curated displays, the spaces may facilitate playfulness and escapism.

St Peters

Custom storage units bring translucent tambour doors and a little bit of two-pack into people’s work lives. General display storage uses fabric, timber veneer and leaning shapes to bring the external colours and breezes inside.

This is how we do TV’s now

A permanent black screen was not the answer in this living room. The projector can work in two directions: on to the white masonry wall for conventional sized viewing, or onto the picture window blind for a cinematic experience. But for the most part this client listens to vinyl or Spotify.

Maylands
A new home office behind an existing single width garage. The space had always been external so there is an effort to retain this feeling while providing surface to facilitate work. A bookshelf display unit connects the space with the room adjacent- a second home office.

22.jpg

Hahndorf
A large open ended curved steel box gutter forms a full-length hallway with full sized windows at each end separates the main living spaces from the sleeping and wet areas. The form of the rooves open up the internal spaces to the stunning views across the valley.

Tusmore
Designed around a state heritage listed palm tree, the pool and spa take their shape from the parameters of the tree protection zone. A steel shade structure prevents fronds from falling into the pool and are patterned to provide a shading effect that is reminiscent of a palm.

Strata wide value renovation.
We were approached to provide an overall design strategy to renovate the communal areas of a 1960’s apartment complex. Working with a ‘good set of bones’ championing the good existing elements such as breeze block and two types of high-quality bricks.

Hyde Park
A raised external deck overlaps into the studio to form a stage or informal seating. The use of marmoleum vinyl on the floor enabled some colour patches as if the work on the walls was abstractly reflected in the floor to give an immersive feel to interaction with colour.

26.jpg

Hawthorn
A renovation of an architect designed house from 1972. There was a unique opportunity for a ‘totem’ type display unit at the base of a spiral stair and viewable from all sides now that a few internal walls had been removed. It became apparent that objects that were omni directional benefited from being displayed from multiple aspects.

Site Analysis
Of particular interest and importance is the analysis of a site. The process of observing, recording, tracing and then representation leads to a deep understanding of the physical, cultural, and visual aspects of the siting of the project.
